How to get to the island

Erraid is located at the end of the Ross of Mull, near Iona. The address is:

Isle of Erraid, Fionnphort, Isle of Mull, Argyll, Scotland, PA66 6BN.

Please check weather conditions and the latest ferry information when traveling, as the weather on the Scottish West Coast can be unpredictable and can influence travel plans. The ferries are the only public access to the island.

Please be aware that you will have to walk on and off the island (see video below) preferably with your luggage, since adverse weather may make it impossible to ferry over luggage, so bear this in mind when packing!

By public transport

  1. Travel to Oban
Make your way from Glasgow or Edinburgh to Oban by bus or train.
If you’re coming from further away, you may chose to stay overnight in Oban (or somewhere along the way) to align with the ferry and bus schedule. Some people stay in Glasgow, or closer to Erraid in Fionnphort or Iona.
  2. Ferry to Craignure
From Oban, take the ferry to Craignure (Mull). See timetable.
  3. Bus to Fionnphort
From Craignure you take the bus to Fionnphort. See timetable.
  4. Pick-up in Fionnphort
A member of the Erraid community will meet you at the bus stop in Fionnphort and drive you with our minivan to Knockvologan, from where you will walk the last part to Erraid together.

Based on the current summer timetables, our weekly logistics are planned around the following schedule. Please check the timetables above for your arrival date*:

ARRIVAL (Saturday)

12:15 ferry from Oban to Craignure (or earlier)

13:30 bus from Craignure to Fionnphort

15:00 – meet in Fionnphort to make the last part of the journey to the island

DEPARTURE (Friday)

14:00 depart together from Erraid

15:20 bus from Fionnphort to Craignure

17:05 ferry back to Oban

*As we live on a remote tidal island, our community logistics are tied to the rhythm of the sea. Things run much more smoothly when everyone arrives, and departs, at the same time. When plans fall outside this rhythm, it adds a lot of extra moving parts and can make daily life here much more of a juggle than it needs to be – we really appreciate your understanding and willingness to accommodate this.

By car

If you are traveling by car, you will need to book the ferry from Oban to Craignure well in advance. See timetable and booking.

Alternatively you can travel via Fort William and first take the Corran ferry (5 minutes) and then the Lochaline – Fishnish ferry (25 minutes). These ferries cannot be booked, you simply arrive and queue. See timetable and service Lochalaine.

When you arrive in Craignure on Mull, turn left off the ferry and make your way to Fionnphort.

Please let us know that you are traveling by car. We will arrange to meet you in Fionnphort* or at Knockvologan.

*Based on the current summer timetables for public transport, we will meet the arrivals group at 15:00 in Fionnphort. It would be really helpful for us if guests arriving by car can align to these logistics, so we can all head over towards Erraid together in convoy.

Parking
Please note that Erraid is not accessible by car, but there is long stay parking available in Fionnphort. We can take you the rest of the way to Knockvollagan in our minibus. From there it is about a 1 mile walk to get to the island.

IMPORTANT: it is essential that you are able to carry your own bags on and off the island (see video below) so please bear this in mind when packing!
